11th We Gather 5k
Captures 1,910 Entrants; Thousands of Groceries
November 24, 2011

When it all started in 2001, there was a hopeful vision of 2,000 to 3,000 runners and walkers as 'We Gather' reached its 10th edition. Mission accomplished in 2010…and nearly as many this year; as on a cool and brilliantly sunny Thanksgiving morning, a crowd of 1,910 participants took to the streets of Cape Cod’s historic Town of Sandwich…each contributing groceries that would load the shelves of the Sandwich and Bourne food pantries for months to come!

Terrapin turtle project

Dr. Sadowski has joined the Barnstable Department of Natural Resources in a brand new program maintaining the preservation of native Terrapin turtles.

Dr. Sadowski was introduced to this fantastic educational program last spring and was immediately interested in becoming involved. Dr. Sadowski was able to sponsor a tank for the Town of Sandwich and the recipient was Mrs. Howell's second grade class at the Wing School. This is the only tank in a school in Sandwich and has become an active center of learning not only for Mrs. Howell's class but also for the entire school.

The innovative program rescues the un-hatched turtle eggs off the tire tracks on Sandy Neck Beach. The eggs are incubated and cared for by the Natural Resource Officers. When the turtles hatch and become viable they are introduced into different school systems across Barnstable. The turtle are placed in classrooms and the students are educated on the turtle's life cycle and how to care for the turtles. The turtles stay with the students until just before the end of the school year at which time they are released.

On Monday, March 21st Dr. Sadowski and his staff were given the opportunity to join Mrs. Howell's class as they presented and read the "Big Turtle Book" that they had written and illustrated. After reading the book, the children thought it would be a great idea to lend us the book to share with patients while waiting for their appointments.

When in the office please don't hesitate to ask to see the beautiful book. We will periodically keep you posted on the turtles and their wonderful 2nd grade caretakers.
